NFL: Cowboys lose TE Princeton Fant for the season

Season over before it starts

Princeton Fant will miss the entire season. The Dallas Cowboys tight end tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee at training camp, and head coach Brian Schottenheimer confirmed the diagnosis on Tuesday. Fant will have surgery within the next couple of weeks.

The injury happened Monday. Fant was blocked backward into a teammate and went down, then left the field on a cart. The team feared the worst, and the tests confirmed it.

A depth piece with a special-teams role

Fant, 27, was entering his fourth NFL season, all with Dallas. He has played just 14 offensive snaps in his career and took none last year, earning his keep on special teams. He spent most of last season on the practice squad, appeared in one game and made one tackle.

Dallas still has Jake Ferguson locked in as the starting tight end, with Luke Schoonmaker, Brevyn Spann-Ford and undrafted rookie Michael Trigg filling out the group. The loss bites harder on special teams than in the passing game, but it thins a position the Cowboys wanted to keep deep heading into September.
