Premier League: Newcastle land Amar Dedic from Benfica

Six signings in, and the window is not shut yet

Thirty-five million euros. That is what Newcastle have handed Benfica for a right-back who spent barely twelve months in Lisbon. The deal for Amar Dedic was confirmed on Tuesday morning, a straight transfer with a sell-on clause tucked in for the Portuguese club.

Dedic has put pen to a five-year contract and takes the No 37 shirt at St. James’ Park. The club’s own statement flagged him as the sixth senior arrival of the summer. On Tyneside, the rebuild is not slowing down.

Jaissle got the player he asked for

This one did not come out of nowhere. Matthias Jaissle, installed on the Newcastle bench this summer, wanted the Bosnian. They worked together at Red Bull Salzburg, where Dedic made his name as a full-back happier running at defenders than sitting behind them.

French audiences have seen him before. He joined OM on loan in early 2025 and left almost no trace in Marseille. Benfica bought him that summer anyway. Twelve months on, they cash in and keep a slice of whatever he does next.

Livramento now has company

Kieran Trippier walked out and left a gap. Newcastle have plugged it with someone younger and considerably more aggressive going forward. Tino Livramento is staying, which sets up a straight fight for the right-back spot.

How Jaissle manages that is the interesting part. Livramento has a full season behind him. Dedic turns up with the manager’s personal backing. Picking between them will be one of the German’s first real headaches in the Premier League.
