Premier League: Newcastle eye Man City outcast Nico Gonzalez

Talks open between City and Newcastle

Manchester City are not done clearing out their midfield. According to The Athletic, talks have begun between the Sky Blues and Newcastle over Nico Gonzalez.

Nothing is done yet. The two clubs are a long way from an agreement, but neither side is shutting the door. The 24-year-old Spain midfielder sits on a short list of targets drawn up by the Magpies.

The move comes at a busy time for City. Bernardo Silva left this summer. Rodri has joined FC Barcelona, and that transfer is now official. Tijjani Reijnders remains in limbo. Pep Guardiola’s midfield is being rebuilt on the fly.

Sixty million and a miss

Gonzalez poses a financial headache. City bought him from FC Porto 18 months ago for 60 million euros. He has never nailed down a regular starting spot.

Things have got worse for him too. The arrival of Elliot Anderson, signed from Nottingham Forest for 145 million euros, has shut the door a little more. It’s hard to hang around when the club has just splashed out on a direct rival for your place.

Cash in now and City can at least limit the damage on an investment that never came close to paying off.

What Newcastle want

The Magpies want depth in midfield and minutes to hand out. That is exactly what Gonzalez has been short of since arriving in England.

The fee will be the sticking point. City will not want to take a bath, and Newcastle will not pay 60 million for a player who has spent a season and a half on the bench.

With 11 days left before the window shuts, both clubs still have time to strike a deal.
