New Zealand Breakers vs Cairns Taipans: Auckland hosts a Round 3 opener with two teams at 1-2 
The New Zealand Breakers welcome the Cairns Taipans to Spark Arena on Wednesday 30 September, with tip-off at 9h30 Paris time. This game opens Round 3 of the NBL27 regular season and brings together two sides that have both started the campaign with one win from three outings.
Three games in, the ladder is still taking shape, but a 2-2 record looks a lot healthier than 1-3 once the calendar turns to October. Both clubs know that early losses pile up quickly in a 33-game season where only the top six reach the finals.
The Breakers opened with a convincing 95-81 home win over Illawarra, then dropped two tight road games: 88-85 in Brisbane and 97-93 in Perth. Cairns lost 111-90 in Sydney, beat Tasmania 93-87 at home, then fell 83-69 in Adelaide last Sunday.
These two teams have not met yet this season, so there is no fresh head-to-head result to lean on. The crossed results say something useful anyway: New Zealand have lost only by four points or fewer, while both Cairns defeats came by double digits and away from home.
That contrast is the heart of this preview. One side has been competitive in every game, the other has struggled every time it has left Far North Queensland.
Wednesday also opens a busy stretch for both clubs. Cairns head to Melbourne to face United on Saturday 3 October, while the Breakers travel to Adelaide on Sunday 4 October.
New Zealand Breakers Analysis 
Gordon Herbert’s first weeks in charge have produced one win and two narrow losses, with an overall points differential of plus seven. The Breakers scored 95, 85 and 93 points, so the attack has held a steady level through a heavy travel schedule.
The opening win over Illawarra showed what this group looks like on its own floor. Sam Mennenga, Parker Jackson-Cartwright and Dejan Vasiljevic led a balanced performance that pulled away in the second half.
Spark Arena drew 2,950 fans for that opener. The Breakers will want a bigger crowd behind them for a game that looks very winnable on paper.
The two losses followed a clear pattern: road games on short rest, both decided in the final possessions. In Brisbane, the Bullets needed a big third quarter from Arnas Velicka to edge them, and in Perth only four points separated the teams at the final buzzer.
The defence has kept every opponent under 100 points so far, allowing 81, 88 and 97. For a group still learning a new coach’s system after three games in three cities, that is a solid base.
Jackson-Cartwright is the name to follow. He sits third on the NBL scoring list at 26.3 points per game and put up 26 points with seven assists in Brisbane, while Vasiljevic added 17 in that same game.
For this match, the key factor is rest and location. After three games in seven days, two of them on the road, the Breakers finally get a few days at home before hosting an opponent that has just crossed the Tasman.

Cairns Taipans Analysis 
Adam Forde’s Taipans sit at 1-2, with a home win over Tasmania wedged between two heavy road defeats. They conceded 111 points in Sydney and managed only 69 in Adelaide, which shows problems at both ends away from home.
The Tasmania game gives the other side of the picture. At the Cairns Convention Centre, the Taipans held the JackJumpers to 87 points and closed out a 93-87 win, their first of the season.
Keanu Pinder has been the standout since his return to the club. He scored 27 points on 11-of-17 shooting in Sydney, while Malique Lewis and Jaylon Brown gave useful support in that opener.
Jonah Bolden gave another option off the bench with 13 rebounds in Sydney. Kyrin Galloway adds further scoring quality to a roster that, on paper, has the weapons to hurt any defence.
Jack McVeigh remains the player who can swing a game. He was held to seven points in Round 1, and Reyne Smith managed only five, so Cairns still need more from their established scorers.
Availability is another issue. Jaylin Galloway is out after shoulder surgery, and Luke Paul was only targeting a Round 3 return from his ankle injury according to pre-round reports.

The Breakers have been in every game this season, and their two defeats came on the road by a combined seven points. Cairns lost their two road games by 21 and 14 points, and they now travel from Adelaide to Auckland in the space of a few days.
Jackson-Cartwright’s scoring form gives New Zealand a reliable first option, while the Taipans are still waiting for McVeigh to find his rhythm. Home court at Spark Arena, where the Breakers beat Illawarra by 14 in Round 1, adds one more argument in their favour.
The margin is harder to call after two close Breakers losses, so we keep the pick simple. A straight home win is the cleanest reading of the evidence so far.
