A bad fit gets worse
Sacramento just got its first win of the season, and the headlines are already about the exit door. Domantas Sabonis wants to leave the Kings, according to ESPN’s Tim MacMahon, and the franchise would listen if a trade came along.
MacMahon did not soften it on The Hoop Collective. “Quite frankly, Sabonis wants out of there, and if they can move him, they would,” he said. “So he’s not happy. It’s a bad situation.” The report was relayed this morning by BasketNews.
Three trips to the All-Star Game make Sabonis one of the more established centers in the league. That is exactly why the situation stands out. A player of that profile rarely becomes a trade topic this early in a season.

What a deal would have to look like
Nothing is close. ESPN’s Brian Windhorst added that any move would still have to “make sense” for Sacramento, which suggests the Kings will not simply take the first offer on the table.
The contract helps and complicates things at once. Sabonis has two guaranteed seasons left, worth roughly $94 million combined. That is a manageable commitment for a contender, but it also means Sacramento holds the leverage of time.
Speculation about his future picked up over the summer, when the Lithuanian switched representation and signed with Aaron Mintz of CAA. At the time it was a rumor-fueling detail. This morning it reads like a first chapter.
