After a nightmare April, the team has come alive in MLB
The talk of a long-overdue decline in Texas may have been premature. Hammered by a wave of injuries in the first two weeks of the season, the Astros stumbled out of the gate with a grim 8-18 record in April. Buried near the bottom of the American League West, the club faced fierce criticism and calls for a full-scale shake-up of the roster. Inside the camp, though, the group stayed together, convinced that getting the key men back fit would be enough to kickstart the machine in MLB.
A stunning surge up the West standings
The tide has officially turned in May for Joe Espada’s men. After a decisive 5-1 win on Thursday night against the Texas Rangers at Globe Life Field, the Astros wrapped up an overseas trip with seven wins from 10 outings. That relentless run has hauled Houston to within two and a half games of the top of the division in MLB. The offence has rediscovered its bite, roughing up opposing pitchers with 10 home runs across four games against their Texas rivals.

Spencer Arrighetti and the bats set the pace in MLB
In the latest meeting, Jeremy Pena and Isaac Paredes set the tone by sending the ball out of the park in the opening inning against starter Nathan Eovaldi. On the mound, Spencer Arrighetti showed plenty of nerve, working six full innings to improve to a superb 7-1 with a tiny 1.34 ERA. The defence chipped in too, with outfielder Cam Smith producing a stunning home run robbery early on.
Stars due back soon to bolster the push through the rest of the 2026 season
The injury list is set to shrink, and that’s welcome news as Houston looks to strengthen for the rest of the MLB schedule. Star closer Josh Hader is expected back on the mound as soon as next week, while ace Hunter Brown is continuing his rehab in the minors. Elsewhere, veteran second baseman Jose Altuve will resume training with the group after suffering an oblique injury. The Astros head into June in good shape and with every intention of taking back their throne in MLB.
