Minnesota Twins look to back up hard-fought win over the Royals

Minnesota opened this series in style, edging it 3-2 thanks to a decisive ninth inning. Frustrated for long spells despite plenty of traffic on the bases, the Twins finally found the breakthrough with a triple that swung the game their way. It was a big win, one that takes them back to .500 and keeps them right in the thick of the American League Central race.

Kansas City have every reason to be annoyed by another sloppy finish. The Royals looked set to bank a positive result for much of the night before letting it slip in the final moments. They’ll need to dust themselves down quickly against Joe Ryan, one of Minnesota’s most dependable starters.

Minnesota Twins : need to cash in more chances

The Twins could have put the game to bed much earlier in the opener. Several promising situations ended in double plays, stopping the team from building a comfortable lead. Even so, the bats stayed patient and kept applying pressure until the gap finally opened up.

The pitching did its part too. Minnesota’s arms piled up 14 strikeouts and didn’t allow another run after the sixth inning, giving the offence the breathing room it needed to turn things around.

Joe Ryan adds another layer of security. With a 3.38 ERA and 131 strikeouts, the right-hander has been as steady as they come all season and does a strong job of cutting out free passes, which could matter plenty against a side like Kansas City.

Kansas City Royals : a weakened roster

The Royals are still struggling to come through in the key moments. In game one, they converted just one of six chances with runners in scoring position, and that lack of bite ended up costing them.

Injuries and absences are also shrinking their options at the plate. Against a pitcher of Joe Ryan’s level, every opening becomes even more valuable.

Randy Dobnak gets the ball for Kansas City. The numbers look decent, but they’re built on a very small sample of innings. It is still hard to know how he’ll cope with an offence that can keep getting men on base the way the Twins do.

Minnesota look the obvious side on paper, but the price on a straight win is fairly short. The smarter play appears to be backing the Twins’ offence, which has a good platform to go past the five-run mark.

Minnesota created plenty in the first game without really making it count. With a bit more luck and against Randy Dobnak, whose numbers are still based on a tiny sample, the home side should have the tools to improve their scoring output.

This pick is also backed by recent meetings. The Twins have cleared this line in three of the last five head-to-heads with the Royals. Add in Kansas City’s current issues, from a weakened roster to a bullpen that struggles to hold leads, and the ingredients are there for Minnesota to put up at least five runs.
