Nine midfielders, one that had to go
One million euros. That was roughly what Le Mans thought they could get for Milan Robin, according to Transfermarkt. They will get nothing.
The 26-year-old is on his way to Estoril, Foot Mercato reports. The Portuguese club finished 10th last season and expect him within hours to put pen to a four-year deal. Robin was into the last 12 months of his contract at Le Mans, and that single detail rewrote the entire negotiation. He is likely to be released rather than sold, with the Sarthe club holding on to a slice of any future transfer.

Promoted, then squeezed out
Rewind a few weeks and this looked absurd. Robin drove Le Mans to a promotion nobody in Ligue 2 predicted, playing 28 league games, scoring once, setting up three more. He had told Foot Mercato how badly he wanted a crack at the top flight.
Then Le Mans changed their mind, days before the opener against Brest.
The maths behind it are not complicated. Nine midfielders sit on the books. The wage bill needs cutting after a promotion that brought Ligue 1 salaries with it. Somebody was always going to be shown the exit, and a player with a year left on his deal is the cheapest one to move.
From regional football to Portugal
Robin’s career has never followed the standard French pro template. Martigues, then the Sarthe. Before that, regional leagues and a stretch with no club at all, a period he talked about openly with Foot Mercato earlier this year.
Ligue 1 was finally within reach. He will chase it from Portugal instead, in a division that has turned plenty of players like him into somebody else’s expensive signing.
None of it is official yet. Until the signatures land, it stays a possibility.
