FC Midtjylland vs Sint-Truiden: unbeaten in Denmark, up against the 12th-placed side in Belgium Conference League

FC Midtjylland have played 11 Superliga games this season and haven’t lost one. Monday’s 2-1 win at Viborg took them to 25 points, seven wins and four draws, with 21 goals scored and 11 conceded.

That run includes a 2-1 home win over FC København on 11 October, Friday Etim and Denil Castillo scoring. FCK were top on 25 points going into the weekend, so the two clubs are level at the head of the table.

Sint-Truiden sit 12th in the Belgian Pro League with eight points from eight games. Before their European opener they’d lost three league matches in a row: 0-2 at home to Westerlo, 2-0 at Beveren and 4-3 at KV Mechelen.

Europe has gone better for STVV. They beat Iberia 1999 2-0 at Stayen on matchday one and sit sixth in the league-phase table on three points. Midtjylland drew 1-1 in Albania with Egnatia and are 15th on one.

Kick-off at the MCH Arena in Herning is 20:00 UK time on Thursday 22 October. The sides have never met.

Bookmakers make Midtjylland 1.62 favourites, with the draw at 4.00 and the visitors at 5.00. Midtjylland played on Monday and STVV on Sunday, so neither side has much of an edge on rest.

FC Midtjylland: 17 goals in their last six, and Etim leads the scoring FC Midtjylland

Mike Tullberg’s side have scored in all six of their last matches in all competitions. They won four and drew two, with 17 goals for and five against.

Some of that is padding:  Midtjylland have won 7-0 at Sundby BK in the cup on 10 September. Strip it out and the league numbers still hold up, with a 4-1 over Brøndby on 14 September and the wins over FCK and Viborg this month.

Friday Etim leads their league scoring with five, and he and Philip Billing have three assists each. Stanley Iheanacho has three goals and Castillo two. Billing runs the midfield, completing around 100 passes a game.

In Elbasan last week Ildi Gruda put Egnatia ahead on 26 minutes before Cho Gue-sung levelled seven minutes later from Rasmus Kristensen’s pass. Cho has only recently come back from a long-term injury.

The only points dropped since early September came in draws: 2-2 at home to Nordsjaelland on 7 September, 1-1 at OB on 19 September and the 1-1 in Elbasan. Before that they’d won at Sønderjyske, AGF and at home to Horsens and Randers.

The one gap in the record is defensive. Over their last 10 games Midtjylland have kept two clean sheets, and both teams have scored in eight of them.

At home over that run they’ve taken 2.33 points per game but conceded 1.33 per match. Across all 10, their expected goals sit at 1.67 for and 1.41 against, closer than the results suggest.

After Thursday, Ajax come to Herning on 5 November, followed by trips to Pafos and Lincoln Red Imps and a home game with Hajduk Split on 17 December. Tullberg usually sets up in a 3-4-2-1, though the predicted side for Thursday has two up front.

Sint-Truiden: three straight league defeats and 2.75 conceded per away game Sint-Truiden

Frédéric De Meyer’s side have been far better at Stayen than anywhere else. Over their last six games their home goals read 10-3, their away goals 3-6.

Across the last 10, STVV have taken 0.75 points per game on the road, scoring 2.25 and conceding 2.75 per away match. They haven’t kept an away clean sheet in that run.

The 4-3 defeat at Mechelen on 11 October showed both sides of it. Samed Baždar, Ilias Sebaoui and Frederic Soelle Soelle all scored, but Kota Takai and Shogo Taniguchi put through their own net before half-time.

The cup tie on Sunday went to plan. Lommel scored after five minutes, then Kaito Matsuzawa, Shion Shinkawa, Soelle Soelle and Nathanaël Mbuku turned it into a 4-1 win. Against Iberia, Robert-Jan Vanwesemael scored on 11 minutes and Sebaoui added the second on 88.

No absences have been reported. STVV dropped into this competition after the Europa League play-off with Omonia, having won the first leg 1-0 on 20 August.

Their last 10 games read W, L, W, L, W, L, L, L, W, W, which comes to 1.50 points per game. The two most recent wins both came at Stayen.

The schedule doesn’t ease off either. A league trip to Club Brugge comes next, and the league phase continues with Brann at home, Hajduk away, Ajax at home and Lugano away.

Probable lineup FC Midtjylland: Bakker; Kristensen, Diao, Bech Sørensen; Martínez, Hong Hyun-seok, Billing, Castillo, Emefile; Cho Gue-sung, Rajović
Probable lineup Sint-Truiden: Kokubo; Vanwesemael, Taniguchi, Musliu, Pupe; Sissako, Ishiwatari; Mbuku, Sebaoui, Merlen; Baždar

Free Conference League Prediction: FC Midtjylland vs Sint-Truiden

Our prediction: FC Midtjylland to win (1.62)

Eleven league games unbeaten, a win over FCK this month and goals in each of the last six. Sint-Truiden have taken 0.75 points per game away over their last 10 and haven’t kept an away clean sheet in that spell.

STVV will probably score. Both teams have found the net in 75% of their away games, and Midtjylland have only two clean sheets in 10. That’s why I’m not touching the handicap.

The home win at 1.62 is where I’d go. Midtjylland’s attack is in better shape than anything STVV have shown away from Stayen this autumn.

About our free predictions

  • What we publish on MathOdds are analyses, nothing more. We share a view, a reading of the moment, but never a guarantee. Sport remains what it is: unpredictable. A red card, an injury, a last-minute goal, and the script changes completely.
  • Let’s be clear: there is no such thing as a risk-free bet. Even when it looks “obvious”, nothing ever is. And yes, that means you can lose. It’s even inevitable at some point.
  • The smartest approach is to stay reasonable. Bet small, set a budget and stick to it. Never use money you need to live on. And above all: don’t chase your losses: that rarely ends well.
  • A bet should remain a game, not a job or a source of income. If it starts taking up too much space in your daily life, causes stress or frustration, take a break. And if needed, talk to a support organisation: that’s what they’re there for.
  • Ultimately, responsibility lies with you. Reading our content means accepting that risk exists and will never disappear, no matter how good the analysis.
  • Essential reminder: gambling is prohibited for minors and must comply with the laws of your country. Need help? Visit begambleaware.org.

No commitment from us

Information changes

A prediction is always based on what we know at the time of writing. But between publication and kick-off, a lineup can change, a player picks up an injury, the weather turns, and the analysis can quickly be outdated. We cannot be held responsible for that.
