A vacancy that started in April
New York dropped 12 games in a row in April and never clawed the ground back. Carlos Mendoza paid for it in June. Andy Green has run the dugout on an interim basis since, and he is not staying there.
Buster Olney reported today that Green will return to his front office role rather than continue as manager. Organizational sources told ESPN the plan for him never changed. Olney also noted the Mets could reward Green by handing him the general manager job, a position currently sitting vacant.
That leaves the manager’s chair open, and the names Olney attached to it do not come from the usual bench coach shortlist.

Two big names, zero games managed
Carlos Beltran and Albert Pujols are both in play if David Stearns decides to chase a prominent hire. Neither has managed in Major League Baseball. Steve Cohen holds final say as owner, Olney wrote, but he will not push Stearns aside to install his own candidate.
Pujols has been quietly building the resume elsewhere. He managed Leones del Escogido to the LIDOM championship and the Caribbean Series title in the 2024-25 winter season, then took charge of the Dominican Republic at this year’s World Baseball Classic. Since retiring as a player he has worked as a special assistant with the Angels, the organization where he spent 10 of his 22 major league seasons.
Beltran already has history with this specific chair. The Mets hired him in November 2019 and parted with him the following January, before he managed a single game, in the fallout from the Houston sign-stealing investigation. Seven years later his name is back on the list.
What Stearns has to weigh
Moving Green upstairs would leave the Mets filling two jobs at once, and filling both with first-timers is a bold way to reset a roster that spent heavily and finished nowhere. Olney singled out Pujols as the name to watch through the offseason.
The decision will not come quickly. New York still has games left on a schedule that stopped mattering months ago.
