2.6 million euros for a Catalan hospital centre
Four hundred patients a year. That is the capacity of the building Lionel Messi has just helped pay for in Barcelona.
The forward has donated 2.6 million euros towards the SJD Pediatric Cancer Center, a complex dedicated entirely to treating childhood cancer. The various services involved in that care are currently scattered across different sites, and the new facility pulls them together in one place.
That detail matters as much as the sum. Families already grinding through months of treatment will not be shuttling between buildings to get it.

A commitment that did not start today
Messi is a UNICEF ambassador, and his foundation has worked in three areas for years now: health, education and sport.
Its website lists a long run of similar work. Funding for childhood leukaemia research. Medical equipment sent to a hospital in Rosario, where he grew up. A child malnutrition programme in Mozambique.
So the Barcelona donation fits an established pattern. What sets it apart is the size of it, and where it landed. Messi spent more than two decades in the city, from La Masia to the exit in 2021.
A bond that survives the sporting split
He plays for Inter Miami now, a long way from Catalonia. The departure from Barca was abrupt, and neither side has ever pretended it went down smoothly.
This donation says something about a city rather than a club. The hospital will not carry his colours. It will not belong to anyone’s crest.
For the families who end up walking through its doors, it is a care centre about to come out of the ground.
