Two Spanish clubs in under five months

Lionel Messi keeps buying into the lower half of the Spanish pyramid. Marca reports the 39-year-old has an agreement in principle to take over CD Eldense, freshly promoted to the second tier. No fee has come out, and nothing is signed.

His first purchase went through on April 16, when the 2022 world champion became owner of UE Cornella, a fifth-division side on the edge of Barcelona. Eldense would be a real jump: amateur football to Spain’s second professional division.

Eldense are 20th out of 22 after four rounds. Two draws, two defeats, no wins. The club sits in Elda, in the province of Alicante, and has spent most of its existence comfortably ignored.

That would change overnight with Messi’s name above the door. Whether it changes at all depends on a signature nobody has seen yet. Right now this remains a line in the Spanish press.
