Rúben Amorim takes over on the AC Milan bench
Rúben Amorim is officially AC Milan’s new head coach. The 41-year-old Portuguese manager arrives in Lombardy a few months after his spell at Manchester United came to an end in January.
At a club that has just missed out on Champions League qualification, it is a clear shift in direction. Milan are backing a coach who is still relatively young, but has already worked in a string of demanding environments across Europe.
A fresh turn after a disappointing season
The campaign ended on a sour note with defeat to Cagliari on the final day of Serie A (1-2). That result sped up decisions behind the scenes and sealed the end of Massimiliano Allegri’s spell in charge. Then the club went through several options as it looked to rebuild from the dugout.
Amorim’s name eventually rose to the top after talks, helped by his work at Sporting CP, where he built a side that was organised and easy to read. In truth, he was not the unanimous choice at first, but the discussions gradually pushed the club towards him, ahead of other candidates considered along the way.
Amorim has signed a two-year deal with AC Milan, with an option for a further year. The contract could therefore run until 2028 depending on results and certain internal conditions. His salary is understood to be around 3.5 million euros net a year, plus performance-related bonuses. A return to the Champions League was already made clear as one of the main targets. The club is mainly looking for a proper reset in football terms, with a more stable side capable of stringing results together over time, which has too often been missing this season.

Milan start again with a new base
The previous season was marked by frequent drop-offs and a failure to get the big games over the line. That lack of consistency ended up costing them in the final table. In that context, the board has opted for a fresh setup around a coach seen as capable of giving the squad structure and a clear plan.
For Amorim, the job comes soon after leaving Manchester United. His time in England was brief, but his work at Sporting CP remains the main reference point in his coaching profile. At Milan, he takes charge of a rebuilding project, with a simple but heavy demand: get the club back among the elite in Italy and Europe, and do it quickly.
