Depay signs through 2028
Memphis Depay is staying at Corinthians. The Sao Paulo club confirmed overnight that its No. 10 has extended through 2028. The announcement landed on the club’s social channels with a photo of the Dutchman, pen in hand.
A few days ago the whole thing looked dead. Corinthians had publicly said they were walking away from their partnership with the forward. Depay hit back without holding anything back, saying an agreement had been reached and that he could take his employer to court. Tempers flared. Both sides went back to the table anyway.
The result: two more seasons in Brazil for a player who arrived on a free transfer in September 2024.
no renewal
Free for 2 weeks.
A Brazilian gamble that keeps going
The move raised eyebrows at the time. At 30, Depay left Europe after spells with PSV, Manchester United, Lyon, Barcelona and Atletico Madrid. Plenty read it as an early winding-down. What he found at Parque Sao Jorge was a status he had not held for some time: the main man.
The Corinthians No. 10 shirt is no small matter in Brazil. Socrates wore it. So did Rivelino. Depay wears it his way, and he has become the club’s marketing face too, right down to the official announcement of his extension.
At international level his standing holds firm. Depay is the Netherlands’ all-time leading scorer, a record he took off Robin van Persie in 2025. Staying in a competitive league matters on that front.
What it means for Corinthians
The club has tied down its most high-profile player just as the Brasileiro heads into its run-in. Losing Depay in the middle of an open dispute would have hurt badly, on the pitch and off it.
Whether the peace lasts is another matter. The two sides were trading public blows less than a week ago.
