Melbourne United vs Cairns Taipans: Cole Anthony faces a team that cannot finish
Melbourne United host the Cairns Taipans at John Cain Arena on Saturday 3 October, with tip-off at 11h30 Paris time. It is a Round 3 game in NBL27, and it pits the league’s newest star against a team that keeps losing the second half.
United are 1-1 after a two-point loss to Adelaide and a 25-point win over the Phoenix. Cairns are 1-2 after heavy defeats in Sydney and Adelaide, with a home win over Tasmania in between.
The clubs have not met yet this season, but Adelaide gives us a clean comparison. United lost 97-95 in the opener, while Cairns lost 83-69 to the same 36ers on their own floor.
That is a 12-point gap in how the two teams handled one opponent. It is also the story of the whole matchup.
Cairns come into Melbourne after a Wednesday trip to Auckland, and United come in with a home crowd and a defence that just held a rival to 61 points. Gobet makes United the favourites, with the line at -5.5 and a nine-point win as its call.
Saturday night at John Cain Arena should not be close. United have the talent, the rest and the momentum.
Cairns are not without weapons, and Pinder proved that in Sydney. The question is whether anyone else shows up on the road.
Melbourne United Analysis
United are 1-1, and the loss is the better story than the record suggests. They pushed Adelaide to the final possession, with a title contender in front of them and their best player on a strict minutes limit.
Cole Anthony scored 30 points on 47.6 per cent shooting in just 21 minutes and 50 seconds on debut. He did it with a lingering calf problem, and he still said he does not expect United to lose another game for a while.
The second game backed up the swagger. United beat the Phoenix 86-61 in the first Throwdown of the season, holding a team that scored 100 points in Perth to 61.
That defensive night is the number to remember. A side that can turn a 100-point attack into a 61-point one has a floor higher than most people give it credit for.
Josh Oduro gives the group a physical presence inside, with 14 points and six rebounds on debut in limited minutes. His size lets Anthony play on the perimeter without carrying the whole load.
The bench matters too, and Jacob Chance has options. Shea Ili is out with a hamstring injury, and Sean Macdonald is out for the season with a second ACL reconstruction, which trims the rotation but does not break it.
United play at home on Saturday after a long gap since their last game on 24 September. Fresh legs against a travelling team are the decisive point for this match.
Try it for $0.99.
Cairns Taipans Analysis
Cairns are 1-2, and the pattern is obvious. At home they beat Tasmania 93-87, and away they lost 111-90 in Sydney and 83-69 in Adelaide.
The Sydney game showed how quickly things can collapse. The Kings outscored them 31-20 in the third quarter, and Adam Forde admitted his team let its emotions get the better of it.
Keanu Pinder was the bright spot with 27 points on 64 per cent shooting in that game. Gobet’s view of the Taipans is blunt: they have improved, but they still struggle to perform for 40 minutes.
Jack McVeigh was held to seven points on seven shots in the opener, which raises questions about how he fits alongside the new arrivals. A team that leans on one big night from Pinder cannot survive a quiet one from its other scorers.
The road is the real problem. Two away games have brought two double-digit losses, and Wednesday in Auckland and Saturday in Melbourne add two more tests.
Availability does not help. Jaylin Galloway is out with a shoulder injury until Round 6, and Luke Paul is out with ankle ligament damage for six to eight weeks.
The schedule is brutal on top of that. Cairns face the Breakers in Auckland on Wednesday, then fly south to meet a rested United side.
United hold the other side of that equation. Their last game was on 24 September, and Anthony’s minutes limit is expected to ease.
That kind of travel is hard on any roster, and this one is thin. Cairns need Pinder, McVeigh and everyone else to be sharp for 40 minutes, and the evidence says that has not happened yet.

Our prediction: Melbourne United win
United lost to Adelaide by two, and Cairns lost to the same team by 14. That single common result tells the story of the gap between these two teams.
Cole Anthony gives the hosts a scorer who can decide a game alone, and the defence has already shown what it can do. Cairns have lost both road games by double digits and arrive after a midweek trip to Auckland.
The Taipans can score in bursts, and Pinder will get his numbers. Ninety-five points against a title contender is a bigger statement than anything Cairns have produced away from home.
Backing a rested home side with a defence that just held a team to 61 points is not a difficult call. The Taipans need everything to go right, and the road form says it will not.
We back Melbourne United to win at home. Their star power, their rest and their defence make them the clear side on Saturday.
in your pocket.

About our free predictions
- What we publish on MathOdds are analyses, nothing more. We share a view, a reading of the moment, but never a guarantee. Sport remains what it is: unpredictable. A red card, an injury, a last-minute basket, and the script changes completely.
- Let’s be clear: there is no such thing as a risk-free bet. Even when it looks “obvious”, nothing ever is. And yes, that means you can lose. It’s even inevitable at some point.
- The smartest approach is to stay reasonable. Bet small, set a budget and stick to it. Never use money you need to live on. And above all: don’t chase your losses, that rarely ends well.
- A bet should remain a game, not a job or a source of income. If it starts taking up too much space in your daily life, causes stress or frustration, take a break. And if needed, talk to a support organisation: that’s what they’re there for.
- Ultimately, responsibility lies with you. Reading our content means accepting that risk exists and will never disappear, no matter how good the analysis.
- Essential reminder: gambling is prohibited for minors and must comply with the laws of your country. Need help? Visit begambleaware.org.
No commitment from us
Our predictions carry no contractual value. They have no legal standing. In short: you cannot rely on them to claim anything if a bet doesn’t come through.
Information changes
A prediction is always based on what we know at the time of writing. But between publication and tip-off, a lineup can change (like Melbourne United’s, for example), a player picks up an injury, and the analysis can quickly be outdated. We cannot be held responsible for that.
Your responsibility
Before placing a bet, simply check that gambling is legal in your country. If it isn’t, that’s your responsibility, not ours.
