An hour and 22 minutes. That was the whole thing.
Daniil Medvedev arrived in Winston-Salem as the top seed and the world No. 8, and he lost his opening match 7-5, 6-3 to Martin Damm, a 22-year-old American who had never taken down a top-10 player in his life.
There was no tight set to point to, no late push, nothing to salvage. Medvedev goes into the US Open next week with barely any match play behind him, which is not the preparation anyone had in mind.

Three French seeds gone in a single night
Adrian Mannarino, seeded ninth, lost 6-1, 7-6 (7-5) to Lorenzo Sonego. Luca van Assche and Quentin Halys, the 11 and 12 seeds, went out too.
Benjamin Bonzi is the one still standing. He meets Rinky Hijikata next, and the Australian got there the long way: three hours and 11 minutes against Raphael Collignon, 3-6, 7-6 (9-7), 7-6 (7-5), with ten breaks of serve across the final two sets. Nobody could hold anything down.
Duckworth is 34, has never won a title, and has not dropped a set
James Duckworth keeps advancing in North Carolina without giving up a set, which is a strange run for a player still without a tour title at 34. He beat Argentine sixth seed Mariano Navone 6-3, 7-6 (7-5). Sonego is waiting.
Cruz Hewitt, 17, son of Lleyton, found Arthur Fery too much and lost 6-1, 7-5. Adam Walton went out to Ignacio Buse. Luciano Darderi, the second seed, dropped the first set to Mattia Bellucci before recovering.
Cerundolo, Baez and Van De Zandschulp all came through. The draw is emptying quickly.
