WNBA: Wings take the last playoff spot and set a franchise record

23 wins, and the best regular season this franchise has ever had

Dallas has not been to the playoffs since 2023. That ended in Arlington overnight with a 96-78 win over Portland that locked up the eighth and final spot and completed the postseason field.

At 23-16, the Wings have already set a franchise record for regular-season wins, with five games still to play. Portland, in its first year of existence, falls to 15-23 and is done.

Bueckers: 22 points, 11 assists, her 23rd 20-point game

Paige Bueckers put up 22 points and 11 assists, three days after dropping 32 on Sunday. That is 23 games of at least 20 points this season, in her rookie year.

She had help everywhere. Jessica Shepard finished with 21 points, 9 rebounds and 6 assists. Arike Ogunbowale scored 17. Awak Kuier had 12 points, 12 rebounds and 5 blocks. Alanna Smith added 10. All five starters in double figures.

The game broke open early in the fourth. Bueckers jumped a passing lane, spotted Ogunbowale alone behind the arc, and the lead ballooned to 84-60. The two of them hit three each of Dallas’ 11 threes.

Portland never led. Not once.

The Fire trailed by as many as 26 and never held an advantage at any point. Bridget Carleton and Karlie Samuelson each scored 14. Emily Engstler pulled down a career-high 15 rebounds and added 12 points.

Dallas had the thing settled by halftime and never let it get close again.

Portland is at Atlanta on Friday. Dallas hosts Connecticut on Sunday, with only seeding still on the table.
