Two outs, and everything flips

Esteury Ruiz drives the ball to the wall in left-center. Three runs score. The Miami Marlins have just put this one to bed.
Arizona clawed back to 4-2 moments later on a Ketel Marte double that brought in Ildemaro Vargas. Marte took third on a throwing error, then Gabriel Moreno was retired on a grounder. Game over. Miami 4-2, Tuesday night in Arizona.

A night of wasted chances for the Diamondbacks
Arizona’s numbers make grim reading. Fifteen runners left on base. Just one hit in 13 chances with runners in scoring position. Two runners stranded in the ninth, two more in the 10th.
Geraldo Perdomo was even thrown out at the plate on a bang-bang play in the 10th as he tried to score from third with one out. Taylor Clarke, Arizona’s sixth pitcher of the night, issued intentional walks to Kyle Stowers and Otto Lopez before Ruiz’s blast. He takes the loss and falls to 2-4.
For Miami, Josh Ekness worked two innings with two strikeouts to get the win. The only run he gave up was unearned.
The wild card race still goes nowhere
That was the real story. Arizona (80-72) stays two and a half games behind San Diego (82-69) in the National League wild card chase. The Padres lost on Tuesday too. The Cubs (84-68) and Phillies (83-68) still hold the top two spots. All four teams lost on the same night, which helps nobody and buries nobody.
On an individual level, Moreno had a full night for the D-backs: a home run, a single, two walks, a stolen base and two runners cut down trying to steal. Griffin Conine homered for the Marlins. Marte, meanwhile, has now reached safely in 12 of his last 13 games since coming off the injured list. Michael Soroka lasted five innings and allowed one run for Arizona before leaving after 80 pitches, two starts back from injury.
