A 178th overall pick, now the highest-paid leader in the room
Ottawa took Mark Stone in the sixth round of the 2010 draft, 178th overall. Sixteen years later, Vegas is paying him $9 million a season to keep wearing the C.
The Golden Knights signed their captain to a new deal on Saturday. Two years, $18 million, carrying him through the end of the 2028-29 season.
He turns 34 with training camps days away and no contract noise hanging over him, which is more than plenty of veterans around the league can say this month. The timing counts for as much as the money here. Vegas kept its dressing-room leader in place while sorting out a stack of salary decisions at the same time.

Seventy-three points in sixty games, which is the whole argument
Stone matched his career high last season with 73 points, 28 goals and 45 assists. He did it in 60 games. On a per-game basis that was the best hockey of his life, and it explains why the front office did not wait around.
His Vegas numbers hold up to any reading: 396 points in 400 games, 136 goals, 260 assists. A point per game across six and a half seasons is rare. Doing it while missing chunks of every year is rarer.
Career totals between Ottawa and Vegas: 707 points in 766 games, 259 goals, 448 assists.
The spring is where he earns it
The Winnipeg native has 97 points in 97 playoff games, 48 goals and 49 assists. During the run to the 2023 Stanley Cup he put up 24 points, 11 of them goals.
That profile carries weight over a long season, and it props up Vegas in Stanley Cup and division markets. The catch sits right there in the stat line. Sixty games is the number bettors should keep in mind before touching his individual points totals.
