NFL: Cowboys lose Malik Davis to hip surgery two days before the opener

A cart ride, Friday, at practice

Not a game. Practice.

Malik Davis left Friday’s session on a cart. The Cowboys running back is set to have hip surgery Saturday, according to ESPN, and is headed for injured reserve. Two days before the season opener.

Stephen Jones didn’t bother dressing it up on 105.3 The Fan in Dallas. “Unfortunately, I think he is dealing with a fairly serious injury that could keep him out for some time. We do not have all the details, we will know more, but I am really disappointed for Malik.” The franchise’s executive vice president offered no timeline.

Four years of grinding for a job he held for one week

Davis, 27, was the No. 1 backup to Javonte Williams. Not a star. A player who had spent four years trying to carve out a place in an NFL rotation and had finally landed a defined role.

Last season: 52 carries, 250 yards, two touchdowns in 10 games. Across his Dallas career: 90 carries for 411 yards and three scores in 25 games. Modest numbers. The sort the staff trusted when Williams needed a breather.

A practice rep, a hip, a season off the rails before it started.

Demercado inherits the job by default

Emari Demercado gets the role. He was claimed off waivers and will back up Williams on Sunday night in East Rutherford against the Giants.

That leaves Dallas thin in a way it did not plan for. Javonte Williams is now the only experienced back in the room, behind a reserve who arrived days ago with almost no time in the system. Managing Williams’ workload just got a lot harder than it looked on Wednesday.

For bettors, the number to watch is Williams’ rushing volume. More touches in a primetime opener, less of a committee split, and more injury risk stacked onto one body. Behind him sits a player nobody can price with any confidence if the script goes sideways.
