Seattle Moves On From Wilson After Missed Playoffs
The Seattle Mariners will not bring back manager Dan Wilson for 2027. The team announced the decision shortly after Sunday’s season finale, a 7-3 win over the Los Angeles Angels that closed a disappointing 76-86 campaign.
Wilson reportedly told players before the finale that he would not return. Seattle finished third in the American League West and missed the playoffs one year after pushing to Game 7 of the 2025 ALCS against Toronto.

Two Seasons, One Deep Run
Wilson went 187-171 across two-plus seasons after replacing Scott Servais in August 2024, taking over despite no previous managerial experience. His best moment came last year, when Seattle rode Cal Raleigh’s 60-homer season to 90 wins, an AL West title, and a five-game Division Series win over Detroit, before falling in seven games to the Blue Jays in the ALCS.
“Collectively we failed to meet our own expectations this season,” president of baseball operations Jerry Dipoto said in a statement. “Dan and I both care deeply about this organization, these players, and the future of the Mariners. After much discussion it was concluded that a new direction is best for 2027 and beyond.”
Wilson thanked the players in his own statement, saying the season “has not gone the way any of us expected” but that he remained proud of how the clubhouse competed. Managing partner John Stanton said the team wants to keep Wilson in the organization in another role.
A Franchise Icon Moves To The Front Office Track
Wilson spent 12 seasons catching for Seattle from 1994 to 2005, making the All-Star team in 1996 and setting career highs of 18 home runs and 83 RBIs that year. He played 1,251 games for the club and was part of four Mariners postseason teams before being named to the franchise’s 50 Greatest Mariners list in August.
Seattle now turns to finding a replacement while trying to keep Wilson involved in some capacity. The search starts with a roster that still features Raleigh and a core that stood two wins from the World Series just last October.
