Mangala gets a fresh start in La Liga
Olympique Lyonnais keep thinning out the squad. The Rhone club confirmed on Friday that Orel Mangala has joined Getafe on loan, the Belgium international heading to La Liga for the season with no option to buy.
There is a financial upside too. Getafe will pick up a little more than half of the midfielder’s wages, welcome breathing room for a Lyon side working hard to cut costs.
Try it for $0.99.
A gamble that never paid off in Lyon
The numbers tell their own story. Signed in January 2024 from Nottingham Forest for a shade over 23 million euros, Mangala never nailed down the shirt. Twenty-seven appearances across all competitions, and still no settled place in the middle of the park.
At 28, he needs to play. Getafe, forever scrapping around the drop zone, hands him a demanding stage to get moving again. He is the second Lyon man to land at the Madrid club this summer, after Martin Satriano.
A move that may not be the last
The reshuffle probably is not finished. Still under contract at Lyon until 2028, Mangala leaves with his long-term future unresolved. The dressing room keeps emptying.
