Manchester City vs Norwich City: nine League Cup titles against a run that starts in round one 
Manchester City have won the League Cup nine times, a total only Liverpool have topped in England. They have held the trophy since March and put it on the line again on Thursday night.
Kick-off is set for Thursday 17 September at 20:30 CEST at the Etihad Stadium. This third-round tie is City’s first outing in the competition, with their Champions League place meaning they came in late.
Norwich City have come the hard way, starting in round one at home to Milton Keynes Dons before knocking out Cardiff 2-1 away on 25 August.
That gap in status is matched by a gap in the schedule. City are coming off a European trip to Porto, Norwich off a fourth Championship game in 13 days.
Recent form looks nothing alike either. City have strung together four wins in competitive action since the league resumed, while Norwich shipped four goals at Middlesbrough on Saturday.
The home club’s pricing says plenty about how seriously they are taking this one. Adult tickets cost 20 pounds and under-18s are 5, a model that usually comes with heavy squad rotation.
The real question is how much rotation. Enzo Maresca has a group deep enough to make eight or nine changes without dropping below standard, which shifts the focus from who wins to by how much.

City have won their first four Premier League games and sit on 12 points, level with Arsenal alone. No other side in the division had that record after matchday three.
The results tell the story better than the total. A 2-1 win over Bournemouth on 23 August, a 4-1 victory at Crystal Palace on 28 August, then a 1-0 success against Coventry on 5 September: the attack has not exactly been on the same page each time.
Enzo Maresca’s men then made it a perfect run with a 1-0 win in the Manchester derby at Old Trafford.
That inconsistency in front of goal has not spread to the back line. The Blues have conceded only two goals across those three league games, and kept a clean sheet on their European opener.
The trip to Porto confirmed the solidity. City won 2-0 away to the Portuguese side on 8 September, with no goals conceded in their first Champions League match.
Erling Haaland is doing Erling Haaland things. The Norwegian has scored five goals in five appearances since the start of 2026-27, and is one of four captains named by Maresca alongside Ruben Dias, Marc Guehi and Gianluigi Donnarumma.
The injury picture improved sharply on Friday. Nico O’Reilly, out against Coventry with a back issue and then ruled out in Porto, was declared “100% available” by his manager in the press conference.
There is just one remaining concern up front. Jeremy Doku, who picked up a calf problem in the 3-0 Community Shield defeat to Arsenal on 16 August, still needs a few more days according to Maresca.

Norwich City: three wins in five league games, but four goals conceded on Saturday 
Norwich are into a fifth straight Championship season, with Philippe Clement in charge since November 2025. Since he took over, only five clubs in the division have picked up more points than the Canaries.
The start to 2026-27 has been encouraging, if not exactly smooth. Four goals conceded at Burnley on 29 August, then a 1-0 defeat at Stoke three days later: the swings have been obvious.
The visit to Bramall Lane was the high point. Norwich beat Sheffield United 3-1 there on 5 September, a strong result away to one of their direct promotion rivals.
The home meeting with Birmingham carried that momentum on. Oscar Schwartau and Papa Diallo struck in the first half in a 2-1 win that lifted the club to ninth, their third victory in four games.
Saturday’s trip, though, exposed the soft underbelly. Norwich led 3-1 at Middlesbrough, pulled level, then caved in to an Ashley Phillips stoppage-time goal in a 4-3 defeat that will sting for a while.
The Norwich squad has been reshaped this summer without any major upheaval. Sam Field arrived from Queens Park Rangers on 19 June 2026, Andre Brooks came in from Sheffield United on 25 June, and defender Bruno Alves joined on loan from Cruzeiro on 18 June.
The scoring remains heavily concentrated in one man. Mohamed Toure leads the club charts with four goals in all competitions, including three in the Championship.

The clearest angle here is the attacking gap. City have scored nine goals in four competitive matches since the restart, including four at Crystal Palace, and Haaland is still averaging a goal a game.
Norwich’s defence just produced its shakiest display of the season. Four conceded at Middlesbrough on Saturday, in a Championship game, five days before heading to the Etihad Stadium.
Fresh legs point the same way. Norwich are playing their fourth match in 13 days, while City come into the tie with a deep squad, only one confirmed absentee and O’Reilly back in the mix.
The expected rotation from the home side does not change the pecking order. City’s backups play at Champions League level; Norwich’s sit at Championship level. The Blues get through, and not by one goal.
