Premier League: Man City ready 140 million bid for Enzo Fernandez

120 million was not enough. City are going again

Manchester City were rejected once and shrugged. Ten days ago the Sky Blues offered 120 million euros for Enzo Fernandez. Chelsea imposed a deadline, judged the bid too light, and closed the file.

That deadline has passed, and City are back. The BBC reports a fresh offer is being prepared at the Etihad, one that lands far nearer Chelsea’s valuation. The London club want 140 million euros minimum before they will even open serious talks, and that is roughly the number expected to reach their desk within hours.

Chelsea paid the same fee for the Argentina international in January 2023. Three and a half years on, he is among the best in the world in his position and one of the dressing-room leaders, second only to Reece James.

The player wants out

Chelsea have insisted all summer that he is not for sale. They are also starting to accept they may lose him anyway.

Fernandez, 25, wants a change of scenery. Trophies, a side that controls games, something other than the permanent turbulence at Stamford Bridge. Real Madrid was the long-held dream. It never happened.

There is also the noise. The Argentina midfielder is booed at almost every away ground in England. Joining a direct title rival would only sharpen that.

Maresca gets his old player back

The manager’s name matters here. Enzo Maresca took over from Pep Guardiola at Manchester City this summer, months after Chelsea sacked him. It was under Maresca, in west London, that Fernandez first hit his ceiling at the top level.

He is now the Italian’s priority target for a City rebuild that needs momentum. Push past the 145 million euros Liverpool spent on Alexander Isak last year and Fernandez becomes the most expensive signing the Premier League has ever seen.
