Penalties settle a tense night at Anfield
Liverpool are into the League Cup quarterfinals, and Wesley Fofana will be the one replaying it in his head. Chelsea’s French defender blazed the decisive spot kick over the bar as Liverpool won the shootout 6-5 on Wednesday, after a 1-1 draw in the fourth round.
The match turned on two penalties in the space of three minutes. Morgan Rogers put Chelsea ahead from the spot in the 40th minute. Cody Gakpo answered for Liverpool in the 43rd, also from 12 yards, and the score stayed level through the rest of the match.
Chelsea had the first chance to win it in the shootout. Emanuel Emegha, the former Strasbourg striker, missed a kick that would have sent them through. That left the door open, and Fofana’s effort closed it for them.

A setback for Chelsea beyond the result
The night also cost Chelsea a defender. Maxence Lacroix went off with a problem to his left thigh in the 46th minute, and the severity has not been confirmed.
Elsewhere in the round, holders Manchester City needed penalties to beat Brighton, Crystal Palace won 1-0 at Fulham, Bournemouth beat Aston Villa 3-0, and Sunderland edged Brentford 3-2. Everton host Newcastle on Thursday in the last tie of the round.
