A shock in the middle of summer
Jorge Messi died on Friday night at the age of 68. Lionel Messi’s father had been taken to a clinic in Rosario, Argentina, after a long illness, according to Argentine media outlets Infobae and Ole.
That illness had already weighed on the tail end of Leo Messi’s run at the 2026 World Cup. His tears during the match against Algeria raised questions, prompting the Messi family to break their silence in June to address Jorge’s health and shut down the rumours doing the rounds.

Far more than just a representative
Jorge Messi was never just a father. He was his son’s agent throughout his career, right at the heart of every major negotiation, including the headline-grabbing move from Barca to PSG in the summer of 2023. As a teenager, Leo leaned on him in Barcelona while his mother stayed in Rosario with the rest of the family.
A fierce defender of his son’s interests, he was also an unwavering admirer of his talent. Back in March 2010, on RMC, he said: “He does a bit what he wants on a pitch.” At the time, Lionel Messi had won only one of his eight Ballons d’Or.
