Lille vs Brest: the league’s tightest defence against its joint-best attack
Four goals conceded in six Ligue 1 matches. Lille’s defensive record is the joint-best in the division, and on Saturday it runs into a Brest side that’s scored 12, joint-most in the league.
Something’s got to give at the Stade Pierre-Mauroy. Kick-off is at 20:45 Paris time.
The stakes are real. Lille sit second, a point behind leaders Monaco, and a win could put them top depending on results elsewhere. Brest are seventh after a 5-1 thrashing of Angers and want to stay in the top half.
But Lille arrive bruised. They were beaten 3-0 at Arsenal on Tuesday, after losing 3-2 at home to Real Betis on their European opener. Six conceded in two Champions League games is a very different story from their domestic numbers.
History sits firmly with the hosts. Lille haven’t lost a home match against Brest this century, and Brest’s last Ligue 1 win in Lille dates back to 1989. Thirty-seven years. That record takes some explaining.
Can Brest’s attack finally break the pattern? The bookmakers aren’t convinced: Lille at 1.74, Brest at 4.20 at best.
Lille: best defence in Ligue 1, but Tiago Santos is gone for the long haul
The injury news hit hard this week. Right-back Tiago Santos was stretchered off against Le Havre and is facing a long spell out with a knee ligament injury. He joins Hamza Igamane, still recovering from a cruciate tear, and Ethan Mbappé, who picked up an ankle problem with the France Under-21s.
Davide Ancelotti can still lean on a structure that works. Lille concede 0.7 goals per league game, the joint-best ratio in France, and goalkeeper Berke Özer has three clean sheets, joint-most in the division. Three shutouts in the last four league games, in fact.
The domestic run reads well: 1-0 at Toulouse, 2-0 against Troyes, a 2-1 slip at Nice, then 1-0 over Le Havre after the break. Not spectacular. Reliable.
Dilane Bakwa scored the winner against Le Havre, his second league goal of the season, and he should take over on the right with Mbappé sidelined. Ueda, on two goals, has moved ahead of Olivier Giroud in the pecking order up front.
The worry is fatigue. Lille have lost two of their last three competitive games, conceding five, and the Arsenal trip took plenty out of them. Still, they’ve scored in every home game this season in all competitions, and that’s no small thing.
Win this, and it’s three straight home league wins. Their longest run of the year.

Brest: 12 goals scored, nine conceded and a centre-back crisis
Twelve goals in six games. Nobody in Ligue 1 has scored more than Brest, and the 5-1 against Angers showed what Julien Lachuer’s side can do when everything clicks.
Five different scorers that night: Ludovic Ajorque, Lucas Tousart, Kenny Lala, Mama Baldé and Pathé Mboup. Ajorque and Mboup are both on two league goals now, while Doumbia leads the way with four goals and two assists, though he hasn’t scored in three matches.
Defence is the other half of the story, and it doesn’t bear close inspection. Brest have conceded nine, the second-most among teams in the top half, and they haven’t kept a single clean sheet. That’s a problem they haven’t come close to solving.
The injury list makes it worse. Raphaël Le Guen is out for months with a broken fibula, captain Brendan Chardonnet has a calf strain and hasn’t played yet this season, and Versini, Baldé and Cagnon are all doubts. Tousart could be pushed into central defence alongside Lloris. Edjouma, on loan from Lille, may not be cleared to face his parent club.
On the road, Brest have opened the scoring in all three away league games. They’ve still dropped five points in those matches. Taking the lead isn’t the issue. Keeping it is.
Before Angers came defeats to PSG (0-1) and Auxerre (2-1). There’s no sugarcoating it: a trip to the best defence in the country, with a patched-up back line, is the toughest test of their season.
Probable lineup Lille: Özer; Goffi, Ngoy, Alexsandro, Perraud; André, Bentaleb; Bakwa, Haraldsson, Perrin; Ueda (or Giroud)
Probable lineup Brest: Selvik; Lala, Tousart, Lloris, Locko; Chotard, Magnetti; Mboup, Nonge, Doumbia; Ajorque
Free Ligue 1 Prediction: Lille vs Brest
Our prediction: Lille to win (odds 1.74)
Lille at home, against a side with a makeshift centre-back pairing. That’s the heart of it. Brest will create chances, they always do, but Lille have given up four goals in six league games and Özer has been outstanding behind that back four.
The Arsenal defeat is the only real concern, and Lille have responded well domestically all season. Their only league defeat came at Nice, and they answered it with a clean-sheet win straight after.
Add the head-to-head, no home defeat against Brest this century, and Brest’s habit of letting leads slip away from home. The case builds quickly. Lille to win at 1.74.
in your pocket.

About our free predictions
- What we publish on MathOdds are analyses, nothing more. We share a view, a reading of the moment, but never a guarantee. Sport remains what it is: unpredictable. A red card, an injury, a last-minute goal, and the script changes completely.
- Let’s be clear: there is no such thing as a risk-free bet. Even when it looks “obvious”, nothing ever is. And yes, that means you can lose. It’s even inevitable at some point.
- The smartest approach is to stay reasonable. Bet small, set a budget and stick to it. Never use money you need to live on. And above all: don’t chase your losses, that rarely ends well.
- A bet should remain a game, not a job or a source of income. If it starts taking up too much space in your daily life, causes stress or frustration, take a break. And if needed, talk to a support organisation, that’s what they’re there for.
- Ultimately, responsibility lies with you. Reading our content means accepting that risk exists and will never disappear, no matter how good the analysis.
- Essential reminder: gambling is prohibited for minors and must comply with the laws of your country. Need help? Visit begambleaware.org.
