Ligue 1: Strasbourg end their slump with a 5-1 rout of Auxerre

A first league win in nearly two months

Strasbourg walked into this one with a mess on their hands. Their last Ligue 1 victory dated back to 6 September, a 6-2 win at Troyes, and since then they had picked up one draw and four defeats. This afternoon at La Meinau they finally broke the spell, beating Auxerre 5-1 on matchday nine.

It did not come easily at first. Martial Godo thought he had opened the scoring in the 24th minute, but the referee spotted a foul by Conrad Harder on Auxerre defender Axel Tuanzebe and ruled it out. Dario Essugo made the breakthrough on 41 minutes, striking from the edge of the box after Tuanzebe blocked Godo’s first effort and goalkeeper Pierre Nardi tried to punch the loose ball clear and missed it.

Four goals once the game opened up

Godo doubled the lead in the 55th minute, finishing low from the left on a counter-attack after a pass from Gessime Yassine. Five minutes later Yassine went down under a challenge from Auxerre’s Christopher Makosso and the referee pointed to the spot. Harder, the culprit on the disallowed goal, drove the penalty past Nardi in the 62nd minute.

Auxerre pulled one back through Cameron Archer in the 68th minute, his sixth league goal of the season, but the visitors were reduced to ten men six minutes later when Lamfia Dioubate was sent off for a clash with Yassine. The 20-year-old Moroccan then took over. He scored in the 77th minute after a pass from Nanasi, and added a header from point-blank range in the 85th from an Oso cross.

What it means in the table

Strasbourg started the day 16th with seven points, inside the relegation playoff places. The win lifts them four spots to 12th and out of the playoff zone. Auxerre drop one place to 13th. The numbers match the scoreline: Strasbourg held 64% of the ball and put six shots on target to Auxerre’s two.
