Ligue 1 : SCO Angers appoint Stephane Gilli as coach to kick off a new era

Stephane Gilli takes charge of the SCO

The handover from Alexandre Dujeux at Angers did not drag on for long. The SCO confirmed on Tuesday that Stephane Gilli has taken over in the dugout. Free since leaving Paris FC in February, the 52-year-old has signed through to 2028 and has been handed the job of building on the work done in recent seasons in Anjou.

His name had been doing the rounds around Raymond-Kopa for days. Now it is official. After helping Paris FC win promotion to Ligue 1 in 2025, Gilli is back in the top flight with a different brief. This time, he is not arriving to spring a surprise. He is here to prove Angers can become a regular presence among the clubs that matter in the division.

The end of the Dujeux era, the man who kept them up

Gilli’s arrival comes at a particular moment. At Angers, Alexandre Dujeux leaves behind a far bigger impact than the bare numbers suggest. Brought in in spring 2023 at a difficult time, the former defender gradually restored stability to a club that was badly short of it. Promotion to Ligue 1, survival last season and a united squad despite limited resources: the 50-year-old did the job.

His work has not gone unnoticed, either. Lorient, back in the top flight themselves, quickly made him their priority to replace Olivier Pantaloni. Impressed by his results as well as his management, the Breton club offered him a two-year deal with a further year in option. Dujeux’s departure therefore brings down the curtain on a coherent spell. He helped rebuild the SCO and gave the club back a measure of calm on the pitch.

A fresh project for Angers to build

Now it is Gilli’s turn to shape the next chapter. There is work to do, but the foundations are there. Angers come off a solid season, have a young squad and still carry the identity of a club that knows how to develop players with room to grow. The new coach arrives on a long contract, which says plenty about the trust shown by the board. And in French football, where managers can be out the door before they have unpacked, that is no small thing.

The next few weeks will reveal the first signs of the plan, especially in the transfer market. But one thing is already clear: after moving on from Alexandre Dujeux, Angers have chosen Stephane Gilli to lead the club into the next chapter of its Ligue 1 story.
