A full-back in midfield, and nobody’s laughing
Ulisses Garcia is a left-back. He always has been. Bruno Genesio has still tried him in the middle this week.
This isn’t some coach’s whim. It’s a response to a hole.
“Ulisses Garcia has been tested in a role in the heart of the game, I feel he has the qualities to play there,” said the Marseille coach on Friday in his press conference, two days before hosting Paris FC.
Try it for $0.99.
The middle has been stripped bare
Arthur Vermeeren has gone back, his loan over. Quinten Timber was sold to Crystal Palace in the final hours of the transfer window. Geoffrey Kondogbia is injured.
Three midfielders down. Nobody brought in to make up for it.
OM had to sell to shore up the books. The club did that. Now the bill is landing on the pitch, in the one area where there are hardly any bodies left.
Genesio isn’t hiding from it: “Kondogbia is injured, we need more midfielders.”
The kids are being thrown in
Kamissoko has been added to the squad for Sunday. The coach sees it as an opening, not a stopgap. “It gives the young players a chance to seize opportunities.”
The line matches Marseille’s European squad, packed with youngsters. This isn’t really a choice anymore. It’s the only route left.
“We have to find solutions, that’s our job, we’ve accepted it.”
Accepted. That’s the right word. On Sunday at 20:45 against Paris FC, we’ll see what it looks like on a proper pitch.
