Ligue 1 : Barcola and Mbaye left out by PSG

Ligue 1 : Barcola and Mbaye left out by PSG

Two absences that say plenty

PSG have named their squad for the opening round of Ligue 1 on Sunday, and Bradley Barcola and Ibrahim Mbaye are not in it.

The pair were both in training on Saturday, but this is not a football decision. Both are heading for the exit, and Luis Enrique has made his call before the transfer window has even shut.

Nuno Mendes is also missing, but for a different reason. The Portugal left-back is serving a three-match ban after his red card against RC Lens in the Champions Trophy.

The newcomers are in

Luis Enrique has, though, called up his new signings. Maghnes Akliouche, Mika Godts and Ferran Torres are all available for the season opener.

João Neves and Ousmane Dembélé are in the mix too. So the French champions begin the defence of their title with a squad that is almost fully stocked, apart from the transfer-market cases and the suspended full-back.

The trio of attacking arrivals changes the look of the Paris squad. Torres brings Premier League and La Liga pedigree, Godts comes in after a full season at Ajax, while Akliouche arrives as Ligue 1’s top creator from Monaco. Three different profiles for a forward line that loses Barcola.

A first game away from the Parc

The match was originally scheduled for the Parc des Princes. In the end, it will be played in Brittany, on the Rennes pitch, with kick-off at 20:45.

The move has sparked reaction in the past few hours, including inside the Paris camp. Luis Enrique has not exactly hidden his irritation over the situation.

So PSG start their league campaign on the road, in a stadium that was meant to be theirs.
