Four holes of sudden death at Crans-sur-Sierre
A birdie on the par-4 18th. Fourth time of asking. That is what it took Thriston Lawrence to see off Paul Casey on Sunday and keep hold of his Omega European Masters crown.
The pair had finished the 72 holes tied at 18 under par on 262. Lawrence carded a 62 in the final round, his best score of the week. Casey, who started the day in front, spent much of the opening nine drifting over par before clawing his way back on the back nine.
Harry Hall finished third at 17 under, one shot shy of the playoff. Angel Hidalgo, Bernd Wiesberger, Francesco Laporta, Angel Ayora and Eugenio Chacarra shared fourth at 16 under.

An Alpine course he keeps coming back to
Crans-Montana suits Lawrence. The South African won there last year too. Back-to-back titles on the same course, 12 months apart, in very different circumstances: this time he was chasing rather than leading.
The win earns $637,500 from a total purse of $3,750,000. More significant is the haul of 835 Race to Dubai points with the season now more than three-quarters through, plus 24 world ranking points.
The number that sums up his week is the 73 he posted in round three, sandwiched between a 64 and a 63 before that closing 62. One off day in the middle of an otherwise excellent week, and still enough to take the title.
The schedule does not let up
The 36-hole cut left 69 players from an original field of 156. It was the 33rd completed event of the DP World Tour season, and the circuit moves straight on next week with the Amgen Irish Open.
Lawrence will arrive there in a different frame of mind. Two straight wins in the same event carry weight, both in a season and in the head, especially with the battle for European places heating up.
