NHL: Larkin sits as Detroit waits on a trade

A scratch with no explanation

Dylan Larkin did not dress for Detroit on Thursday night against Chicago, and the Red Wings are not saying why. Head coach Todd McLellan declined to give a reason. All he offered was that interim general manager Shawn Horcoff will address the situation at a later time.

Sportsnet filled in the blank. According to its report, Larkin is not expected to play again until a trade is completed. He also missed Wednesday’s practice, which the team described as a maintenance day.

Months of friction

None of this came out of nowhere. Larkin asked for a trade over the summer and was stripped of the captaincy on Sept. 11. He has still played 10 games this season, collecting six points on two goals and four assists.

The contract complicates any exit. The 30-year-old is in the fourth season of an eight-year, $69.6 million deal, so whoever lands him inherits a long commitment.

Eleven years in one sweater

Detroit drafted Larkin 15th overall in 2014, and he has played 818 career games for the franchise. In that time he has piled up 649 points, 278 of them goals and 371 assists. No deal has been announced yet.
