When the World Cup throws Spanish football off schedule
There are problems any club would love to have. La Liga has one of them this summer: what do you do when half your best players are still out in the World Cup while the domestic season is meant to get back up and running? The answer came on Tuesday. Real Madrid, Barca, Athletic Bilbao and Real Sociedad will not kick off alongside everyone else. Their return has been put back by a week. The result is a first round that no longer lasts 48 hours, but stretches across 12 days, from 15 to 27 August.
Mourinho left short of his stars for his big debut
The timing is almost brutal for Jose Mourinho. The Portuguese coach, only just in the Madrid dugout, was due to start his new era against Real Sociedad at the Santiago Bernabeu, with the sort of hype that always follows him around. That fixture has now been moved to Wednesday 26 August. This is not some fancy scheduling flourish, just plain logistics: you cannot ask a side to play when, on paper, several of their men could still be trudging back from a World Cup semi-final or some exhausting summer run to the final four.
The same story applies in Catalonia. Barca, who were meant to host Athletic Bilbao at San Mames in their opener, will now play that match on Thursday 27 August, the final date of this stretched-out opening round. Two giants, two disrupted schedules, one very obvious reason sitting in the background.

A proper game of musical chairs in the fixture list
In practical terms, it means Real Madrid and FC Barcelona will not begin with the matches originally lined up for them. They will jump straight to the games scheduled for matchday two. Real will open their Liga campaign against Espanyol on Saturday 22 August, while Barca travel to Elche on Sunday 23. It is a neat way of avoiding a full-scale fixture pile-up, shifting games around so everyone keeps moving without leaving the rest of the league staring at dead space in the calendar.

Atletico, though, does not budge
What makes it even more pointed is Atletico Madrid. The club also has its share of World Cup semi-finalists, nine players in total, more than enough to make a strong case for the same treatment. And yet Atletico will still host Malaga on the original date, Wednesday 19 August. No special dispensation, no delay. It is as if La Liga has chosen to deal with clubs one by one rather than apply a single rule across the board.

12 days for one round of matches
In the end, the first round of the 2026-27 Liga season is shaping up to be one of the most drawn-out in recent Spanish football history. First kick-off on 15 August, final whistle on 27 August, almost two weeks for a single opening round. It is a pretty clear sign of how much the international calendar now dictates what happens in domestic football, and another reminder that the modern game has to live with a World Cup whose aftershocks last far beyond the summer it actually takes place in.
