NHL: Koivunen signs 8-year extension with the Penguins

Koivunen ties his future to Pittsburgh

The Penguins have their man. Pittsburgh has locked up forward Ville Koivunen on Thursday. The deal runs for eight years and is worth $32 million, an average of $4 million per season.

Koivunen was a restricted free agent. The Penguins moved fast, and the 23-year-old Finn is set to be part of the roster for years to come.

A bet on the Finns development

The NHL numbers are still pretty modest. Koivunen has scored 2 goals and added 5 assists in 39 games for the Penguins in 2025-26. Across his young NHL career, he has 14 points in 47 appearances.

There is still plenty of room to grow. In the AHL with Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, he put up 41 points in 34 games last season. Pittsburgh is banking on that offensive upside.

From Carolina to a bigger role

Koivunen made his NHL debut in March 2025. Carolina drafted him in the second round in 2021 before sending him to Pittsburgh in the Jake Guentzel trade. Now he is firmly part of the Penguins’ long-term plan.
