New York need to rediscover their control

Right through the playoffs, New York had looked like a side with an answer for everything. That feeling cracked a little in Game 3. The Knicks kept scoring, but the flow drained out of their offense as the night wore on. Jalen Brunson again carried the load with 32 points, yet a string of costly turnovers stopped New York from dictating the tempo. Karl-Anthony Towns also had a tougher night than usual, leaving more of the scoring burden on his teammates.

OG Anunoby was one of the few who kept his level at both ends. His energy kept the Knicks alive until the finish, but the mistakes piled up and they paid for it. Against a San Antonio team playing with more and more belief, New York have to get back to the discipline that got them through the first two games. The encouraging part for Tom Brown is that the offense is still generating good looks. With Brunson pulling the strings and several players who can catch fire in a hurry, the Knicks still have plenty of punch.

Wembanyama has reignited the Spurs

Game 3 was probably San Antonio’s season on the line. Down 2-0 after two home losses, the Spurs needed an immediate response. They got one, and then some. Victor Wembanyama delivered his best performance of the Finals so far. More aggressive, stronger around the rim and better served by his teammates, the Frenchman forced New York to keep changing its plan. Castle added useful scoring, while Harper keeps growing in importance in the Texas rotation.

Beyond the individual numbers, it was the Spurs’ team shape that stood out. The ball moved better, the screens opened space, and the offense finally found a rhythm New York struggled to break, helped in no small part by the turnovers. Most of all, the win gave San Antonio a new certainty: when Wembanyama gets the ball in good spots and the shooters knock down their looks, this team has enough weapons to go toe to toe with the Knicks anywhere.
