1.6 million followers and a Lyon shirt

Keito Nakamura was announced by OL on September 3. Four-year deal. One million euros up front, up to 19 million in add-ons, and 12.5% of any future resale fee. A joker signing, in Ligue 1 terms, brought in to replace Malick Fofana.
Back home the headlines piled up. “Keito Nakamura joins the prestigious club of Olympique Lyonnais,” wrote Nikkan Sports. Tokyo Sports called Lyon “a formidable team, seven-time champions of France” now playing in the Europa League. Sports Nippon framed it as another rung climbed.
OL wasted no time launching an official OL Japan account on X. Merch, tickets, a fresh Asian audience. None of that is why he signed.

What Fonseca went after
270 club and international appearances. Gamba Osaka, Twente, Sint-Truiden, FC Juniors OO, LASK, Reims. At 26, the left winger has been around.
Last season in Ligue 2 with Reims he put up 14 goals and 3 assists across 32 appearances, 29 of them starts. Reims held onto him through 2025 despite offers from Villarreal and Besiktas reported at up to 18 million euros.
This summer the queue got longer. Marseille moved early, then backed off over money. Hull City, Bournemouth and Everton all tracked it. Nakamura wanted the top half of a table and European nights. He chose Lyon in the last 10 days of the window.
Fonseca had been watching him back at Lille, when the Japanese forward was still at LASK. That one never happened. Reims got there first.
Maybe Saturday
“It is an honour to be the first Japanese player to play for this club. Since I was a child, I really loved the Juninho era,” he said at his first Lyon press conference. He also owned up to feeling “a bit tense” in his first days before the dressing room loosened him up.
His last competitive match was June 29, against Brazil. Two and a half months idle. Hence a week of fitness work and video sessions rather than tactical drills.
Fonseca answered the only question Lyon fans care about. “Keito Nakamura is ready. I liked the work he did this week. He arrived in very good physical condition.” His coach calls him “a player for the final decision, who strikes the ball well and finishes well”, a very different profile to Fofana.
