Kansas City Current put out a short statement Monday. Vlatko Andonovski is gone, by mutual consent, less than a year into the sporting director role he pushed for himself.
“Both sides felt the move he had asked for, from the dugout to the sporting director role at the end of last season, was not the right fit,” the club said. Read that again. His idea, his request, and it did not take.
They wished him luck with whatever comes next. Nothing else.

The man who left had just won the Shield
Andonovski, 49, took over as head coach on 23 October 2023. By the end of 2025 he had delivered the NWSL Shield, the trophy that goes to the best regular-season side in the league. You do not usually walk away from a job right after that.
He did. Chris Armas came in on the touchline, Andonovski went upstairs, and ten months later the office is empty again.
His CV goes well beyond Kansas City. He ran the United States women’s national team from 2019 to 2023, which is about as exposed as coaching gets in this sport.
A squad built by a man no longer in the building
The Current are mid-season without a sporting director. Their head coach has under a year in the job. Most of the roster was assembled by the person who just left. No replacement has been named.
Coaching and running a club look like the same job from the outside. They are not, and Andonovski just found out in public.
