Jordan Henderson joins the Chelsea project

Transfer latest : Jordan Henderson, the signing nobody saw coming at Chelsea

It would have sounded like a flimsy rumour even a year ago for Jordan Henderson to end up at Chelsea. The Blues had built their squad around young, high-upside players, some with barely any top-level experience at all. So the arrival of Liverpool’s former captain says a lot more than a simple transfer ever could.

At 36, Henderson is not heading to Stamford Bridge as the future of the club. Chelsea know exactly what they are getting: a player who can speak up in the dressing room, guide the younger lads and bring a bit of stability to a side that has too often looked short on direction in recent seasons.

Brentford did not stand in his way

The move gathered pace once Brentford and the England midfielder agreed to part company by mutual consent. Henderson still had a year left on his deal, but both sides decided it was better to open the door to something new than drag on a relationship that had clearly run its course.

Chelsea did not hang about. Talks moved quickly and Henderson is now set to bring his experience to a squad that was crying out for a seasoned midfield presence. The Blues had looked at other options over the summer, but it was the England international who got the nod in the end.

A signing that may signal the end of an era

For several transfer windows, Chelsea had almost ruled out signing players edging towards 30. That policy helped them build a highly promising squad, but also one of the youngest in the Premier League. With Henderson, the club appears to be admitting that a team cannot be built on potential alone.

The move does not guarantee the midfielder will recover the role he once had at Liverpool. But it does show Chelsea are no longer looking only at birth dates when they strengthen the squad. For a club that had made youth its main recruiting rule, this is probably the biggest shift of the summer.
