Gone on the opening drive
Eleven minutes and twenty seconds into Sunday night in Inglewood, the Giants’ season got complicated. Third down, incomplete pass, and Jaxson Dart caught a hit from two directions at once: Byron Young high, Josaiah Stewart low. The left knee folded underneath him.
He grabbed at the leg, then walked off under his own power. Treatment on the sideline, then the locker room, again without help. He did not come back out for the third quarter. New York lost 28-6.
NFL Network reports an MCL sprain. ESPN says the X-rays came back clean.

Two versions of the same knee
The messaging out of New York has been all over the place. General manager Joe Schoen told ESPN at halftime that Dart was “fine”. John Harbaugh, asked afterwards, sounded like a man with no idea. “We’ll know more tomorrow. That’s about it, really. We’ll get an MRI tomorrow and have a clear picture.”
The scan is set for Tuesday. Everything before that is guesswork.
Jameis Winston took over on the next possession and went 11 of 27 for 111 yards with an interception. Dart had been 3 of 5 for 20 yards when he was forced out.
What New York stand to lose
Dart is not a plug-and-play situation. The Giants built the roster around the idea that he is their quarterback, and the rookie year backed it up: 2,272 passing yards, 15 touchdowns against 5 interceptions across 14 games and 12 starts, plus 487 yards and nine scores on the ground.
He picked up where he left off this season. On September 13 he went 23 of 29 for 230 yards and three touchdowns without throwing a pick, and New York beat Dallas.
An MCL sprain rarely needs surgery. The timeline is entirely about the grade, which is the one thing nobody in the building knows yet.
