A deal needed one signature
San Francisco thought it had a receiver. According to Fox Sports, which broke the story Sunday, the 49ers and Vikings had arranged a trade for Jauan Jennings, with one condition left: the player had to agree. He did not.
ESPN added that Minnesota gave Jennings a voice in the process. He believes in where the Vikings are heading, and the organization sees him as a key part of its offense. That fits a team that sits at 6-1 even after Sunday’s 19-15 loss at Detroit, which ended its unbeaten run.

A modest role in Minnesota
The numbers do not show a player the Vikings cannot live without. Entering Sunday, Jennings had four catches on eight targets for 43 yards. He had played 71 percent of the offensive snaps, 234 in all, across five games with two starts. Against the Lions he caught two passes on two targets for 11 yards, working behind starters Justin Jefferson and Jordan Addison. He signed a one-year deal with a reported $8 million base salary and incentives that could take it to $13 million, after the 49ers chose not to re-sign him in the offseason.
San Francisco knows what he can do. A seventh-round pick out of Tennessee in 2020, Jennings caught 210 passes for 2,581 yards and 22 touchdowns in 75 regular-season games for the club from 2021 to 2025. Last year he started all 15 games he played and led the team with 643 yards and a career-high nine touchdowns.
Why the 49ers came calling
The 49ers are 6-1 and short at receiver. Ricky Pearsall, De’Zhaun Stribling and Demarcus Robinson are on injured reserve, and Deebo Samuel Sr. (hamstring) and Mike Evans (Achilles) are both dealing with injuries.
