6-2 up, and out anyway
Elsa Jacquemot is out of the US Open in the second round. Leylah Fernandez beat her 2-6, 6-3, 6-2 in a match that ended around 04h30 French time.
The Frenchwoman could hardly have started better. Two breaks of serve, the opening set 6-2, everything working. Then Fernandez cleaned up her own game and took the next two sets without ever really being troubled again.

Fernandez is a different player here
The Canadian reached the final at Flushing Meadows in 2021 at 19 years old, beating several top-five players to get there. Nothing in her career since has come close, and New York remains the one place where that version of her keeps showing up.
Her lefty angles are what turned this one. She kept pulling Jacquemot wide and jamming the forehand side, and from the second set on the French player was defending.
A good Tuesday for the French men, less so the women
Benjamin Bonzi came back from two sets down against Marcos Giron. Ugo Blanchet beat Jakub Mensik after four and a half hours. Adrian Mannarino got past Jordan Thompson in four.
The women’s side of the draw looks emptier. Jacquemot leaves after one round won, from a match she was leading.
