That gap in availability tells the whole story. It also explains why the Jaguars are laying 8.5 at home in the opener.

The total is set at 40.5 points, one of the lowest on the weekend slate. The Jaguars are priced at 1.21 to win outright, Cleveland at 4.60.
The spread has moved from 7.5 to 8.5 since the market opened, which only makes life harder for the favourite. With a total this low, every extra point matters twice as much.
The Jaguars enter their second season under Liam Coen after winning the AFC South. Cleveland, by contrast, begins the Todd Monken era with a completely new offence.
One side is settled, the other is rebuilding, but the Browns do bring the best defensive weapon in the game. That mismatch makes this one a lot more open than it first looks.

Lawrence played all 17 games in 2025 and finished with 341 completions on 560 attempts for 4,007 yards, 29 touchdowns and 12 interceptions. He finished fifth in MVP voting.
His work on the ground mattered just as much: 82 carries, 359 yards and nine touchdowns. That makes him a real threat near the goal line, not just a pocket passer.
That mobility matters even more against Cleveland’s defensive front. Lawrence does not need perfect protection to turn a broken play into positive yardage.
The real offensive problem for the Jaguars is Myles Garrett, who piled up 23 sacks last season. Coen cannot afford to let Lawrence stand back there and take hits all afternoon.
The sensible plan is screens, quick throws, pre-snap motion and a run game that keeps the offence in manageable second downs. One strip sack could swing a game capped at 40.5 points.
Travis Hunter also returns after a shortened rookie season. He gives the Jaguars another elite athlete who can be moved around the formation.
The Jaguars’ offensive line remains the question mark, with Cole Van Lanen still working his way back to full strength after a knee injury. His status at right tackle will have a direct impact on how well they handle the pass rush.
The Jaguars have the higher offensive ceiling of the two teams. That said, Lawrence still needs time to make it count.

Cleveland leans on its defence and the return of Deshaun Watson 
Todd Monken has officially named Watson the starter ahead of Shedeur Sanders. It was a decision he backed after everything he saw in the offseason, training camp and preseason.
Watson missed Cleveland’s final ten games of 2024 and then all of 2025 because of Achilles injuries. His return is the biggest unknown in this matchup.
His preseason gave mixed signals: 11 completions on 15 attempts for 126 yards in his first outing, then 5 of 12 for 36 yards and an interception in the second. Even so, Monken felt the full body of work gave Cleveland its best chance to move the ball.
Around him, Quinshon Judkins is set as the starting running back, with Jerry Jeudy leading the receiving group and Harold Fannin Jr. at tight end. The Browns have talent, but they still have to get all the pieces working together against the Jaguars.
In Florida heat, against this Jaguars defence, nobody wants a quarterback coming off that layoff throwing it 40 times. The safer route is the run game, play-action and short-yardage third downs.
The defence remains Cleveland’s trump card. Garrett creates pressure without Monken needing to blitz all day, which keeps the back end protected.
Carson Schwesinger, the 2025 defensive rookie of the year, enters his second season as the centrepiece. He gives the Browns a young but already dependable anchor in the middle.
The big risk is fatigue: a defence asked to defend long drives in the heat tends to lose its edge late. Cleveland’s offence will need to give it some breathing room, even if that does not always mean points.

Cleveland will lean on its run game and keep Watson on a short leash in his first official outing in two years. That is exactly the kind of plan that lengthens drives and cuts possessions.
The Jaguars do not need a shootout either: with Garrett on the other side, Coen will prioritise safety and steady field position. A score somewhere around 24-13 or 23-16 fits this setup perfectly.
