Premier League: Ipswich close in on Breel Embolo

A wage packet, and everything changed

The deal was nearly done. Atlanta United had its striker, Rennes had its 17 million euros, and Breel Embolo looked set to spend the summer in Georgia.

Then he saw the salary offer. And turned it down.

According to L’Equipe, that one detail was enough to blow the move apart. Not the transfer fee. Not Rennes’ willingness to sell. The personal terms. The Swiss international simply was not prepared to accept what the MLS side put on the table.

Ipswich waited for their opening

Promoted to the Premier League this summer, the Suffolk club moved fast. The same reports say Ipswich have already sent Embolo a contract offer and are ready to meet Rennes’ financial demands.

None of this is random. Ipswich have spent the past few days shopping in Ligue 1, with two players arriving from Strasbourg. A newly promoted side raiding a French league where prices are still manageable is a strategy, not a coincidence.

Embolo would have a genuine role. Twenty-nine years old, a Switzerland international, comfortable with his back to goal and able to hold the ball up on his own. That is the profile a promoted club leans on when survival is the target.

Rennes want a sale, Atlanta have not walked away

In Brittany, the position has not shifted. Embolo is contracted until June 2029, but the club decided some time ago that he leaves this summer, and they want a fee in the same range as Atlanta’s.

The American franchise is still lurking. If talks with Ipswich stall, they are ready to step back in.

The English side hold the advantage for now. Whether the player signs is another matter. He has already said no once this summer.
