Huddersfield Town vs Luton Town: first against fourth, and five wins from six for the visitors League One

Twenty-seven goals in 13 league games make Huddersfield Town the highest scorers in League One, and that figure has put them top on 28 points. Luton Town come to the John Smith’s Stadium on Tuesday 3 November, kick-off 19:45 UK time, fourth on 23 points and five wins from their last six.

Huddersfield’s record reads eight wins, four draws and one defeat, with a goal difference of +16. Luton’s is seven wins, two draws and four defeats, +6, so a home win would open an eight-point gap between the clubs.

The last two meetings were split. Luton won 2-1 at home on 25 November 2025 and Huddersfield won 1-0 at this ground on 27 January 2026. Across 12 meetings Huddersfield have won three, Luton four, and five have been drawn.

Both teams have scored in seven of those 12 matches, which is a useful starting point, because the same trend runs through both sides’ recent results. Huddersfield’s last ten matches have seen both teams score in 60% of games. Luton’s figure is 70%, and it rises to 80% away from home.

The match price is 2.05 Huddersfield, 3.60 the draw and 3.25 Luton. We think the result is harder to call than the goals, and the goals market is where we’ve gone.

Huddersfield Town: four straight wins and finishing well above their expected goals Huddersfield Town

Huddersfield have won their last four league games and scored 11 goals doing it: 2-0 at Plymouth, 4-1 against Peterborough, 2-1 against Wigan and 3-0 at Bradford City on Saturday. Before that came a 2-2 draw at home to Sheffield Wednesday and a 3-1 win at Burton.

Over their last ten matches they’ve averaged 2.50 goals per game from an expected goals figure of 1.78. We wouldn’t assume that gap holds indefinitely. It does mean the numbers flatter the attack a little, and the home figure of 3.25 goals a game comes from a run of 1.69 expected.

Joe Taylor has nine goals and Derensili Sanches Fernandes seven, and both scored at Bradford. Fletcher is expected to start through the middle alongside them, in a side that has failed to score once in its last ten matches and never at home.

At home the defence is less secure than the league position suggests. Huddersfield have conceded a goal a game at the John Smith’s over the last ten, kept a clean sheet in 25% of those home matches, and drawn 2-2 with Sheffield Wednesday in the same run. They’re unbeaten in six league games here all the same, with 15 points taken.

Ryan Ledson serves the last match of a three-game suspension, which keeps Humphreys and Collins as the likely central pair. Lynden Gooch and Marcus Harness are both in contention to feature, and they give the bench some experience if the game needs changing late on.

Luton Town: one clean sheet since 2 September, and 21 goals in eight games Luton Town

Luton’s 2-0 win at Peterborough on Saturday was their first League One clean sheet since 2 September. Jack Wilshere’s side had gone two months without one, and they still won four of their previous five league games.

That output is 21 goals in their last eight matches in all competitions. The league run includes 4-1 at Wycombe, 2-1 against Barnsley, 2-1 against Leicester and 3-1 against Doncaster, and the only defeat in six was 2-1 at MK Dons.

The split between home and away is wide. Luton have taken 2.40 points per game at Kenilworth Road over their last ten matches and 1.40 on the road, conceding 1.20 away from home. They also haven’t failed to score in any of those away matches, averaging 1.80 goals a game.

Wilshere’s midfield is built around Walsh, with Palmer, Clark, Donley and Richards ahead of him. Nahki Wells is the likely starter up front, and Dan Gore is an alternative in the middle of the pitch if the visitors need more control.

Harrison Ashby is coming back from injury and is expected on the bench. Luton have allowed 1.43 expected goals per away game over the last ten, which is the figure we’d point to when asked whether Huddersfield’s forwards will get their chances.

Probable lineup Huddersfield Town: Young; Roughan, Balker, Low; Bronkhorst, Humphreys, Collins, Mumba; Sanches Fernandes, Taylor; Fletcher
Probable lineup Luton Town: Shea; Jones, Andersen, Johnston, Johnson; Walsh; Richards, Donley, Clark, Palmer; Wells

Our prediction: Both teams to score @ 1.53

Luton haven’t failed to score away from home in their last ten matches, and they’ve kept one league clean sheet in two months. Huddersfield have failed to score once in ten and never at home, while keeping a clean sheet in only a quarter of their home games in that run.

The argument against is the January meeting here, a 1-0 Huddersfield win, and the fact that only four of the 12 meetings between these sides have gone over 2.5 goals. Seven of those 12 still had both teams scoring, which is why we prefer this market to the over at 1.60.

A home win at 2.05 is a fair price for the division’s leaders, but it asks a lot of a defence that has conceded in four of its last six league games against a side scoring at Luton’s rate. We expect something like 2-1 or 2-2, and both teams to score at 1.53 covers each of those.

About our free predictions

  • What we publish on MathOdds are analyses, nothing more. We share a view, a reading of the moment, but never a guarantee. Sport remains what it is: unpredictable. A red card, an injury, a last-minute goal, and the script changes completely.
  • Let’s be clear: there is no such thing as a risk-free bet. Even when it looks “obvious”, nothing ever is. And yes, that means you can lose. It’s even inevitable at some point.
  • The smartest approach is to stay reasonable. Bet small, set a budget and stick to it. Never use money you need to live on. And above all: don’t chase your losses: that rarely ends well.
  • A bet should remain a game, not a job or a source of income. If it starts taking up too much space in your daily life, causes stress or frustration, take a break. And if needed, talk to a support organisation: that’s what they’re there for.
  • Ultimately, responsibility lies with you. Reading our content means accepting that risk exists and will never disappear, no matter how good the analysis.
  • Essential reminder: gambling is prohibited for minors and must comply with the laws of your country. Need help? Visit begambleaware.org.

Information changes

A prediction is always based on what we know at the time of writing. But between publication and kick-off, a lineup can change, a player picks up an injury, the weather turns, and the analysis can quickly be outdated. We cannot be held responsible for that.
