MLS: Houston hit five straight shutout wins for a club record

A defender who never scores, and a goalkeeper with nothing to do

Franco Negri had not found the net all season. In the 34th minute at BC Place on Wednesday, the Houston Dynamo defender picked his moment and bent a long-range effort into the top corner. One goal, three points, job done.

Mateusz Bogusz started it, driving to the edge of the box before Mathias Laborda poked the ball away from him. It ran loose to Negri, waiting out on the fringe. Third goal in four MLS seasons.

462 minutes since anyone last beat Jonathan Bond

One night does not explain this run. Houston have now won five in a row without conceding, 462 minutes of clean sheets, a mark only two other clubs in league history have matched inside a single season.

Bond faced exactly one save on his way to an eighth shutout of the campaign. Vancouver had 61.9% of the ball and 16 shots to Houston’s eight, yet put only one on target against the visitors’ five. Rayan Elloumi thought he had equalised in the 64th minute. VAR sent it back, ruling against Andres Cubas earlier in the build-up.

38 points, and a new team at the top of the West

The Dynamo (12-6-2) sit on 38 points, one clear of the Whitecaps (11-4-4), and the West has a new leader. Six wins and two draws from their last eight regular-season matches tell the story, including a 1-0 home win over these same opponents back on 16 May.

Vancouver are trending the opposite way. One win, three defeats and three draws in their last seven across MLS and the Leagues Cup. Before Wednesday they had dropped just one of their previous 10 league games at BC Place, a record of seven wins, two defeats and a draw.
