Houston wants more than a spot in the postseason. The Texas club is chasing a first-round bye, and it is only four games over .500.
That is down to the tight race across the American League this season, where a middling record is enough to sit near the top. Arizona, by contrast, still has work to do to secure its place in a tougher National League West.
So this matchup comes down to a simple point: two teams with similar records, but very different returns at home and on the road.

The problem for the Diamondbacks is their road form: 33-37 away from Phoenix. In other words, they lose more often than they win on the road.
That is a major factor in this series in Texas. Arizona has to make up for being a poor travelling side against a Houston team that is not exactly unbeatable at home either.
Recent results show a side that can be brilliant one night and flat the next. Arizona beat the Giants 10-6 on the road in late August, then lost 7-2 the following day, before being blanked 7-0 by the Cubs at home.
That inconsistency is the real concern. Their overall record flatters a team whose performances can swing wildly from game to game.
The National League West also demands a punishing travel schedule. Teams in the West rack up far more miles than those in the East, and that tends to show up late in the season.
Arizona finishes this interleague series away from home before returning to divisional play. There may also be a temptation to save certain pitchers for the games that really matter.
