Holstein Kiel vs Hoffenheim: four meetings, four Hoffenheim wins, 19 goals
Hoffenheim have played Holstein Kiel four times and won all four, scoring 14 goals and conceding five. The last competitive meeting at the Holstein-Stadion, in January 2025, finished 3-1, and the sides met in this same round of the DFB-Pokal in October 2021, when Hoffenheim won 5-1.
They meet again in the second round on Wednesday 28 October, kick-off 19:45 UK time in Kiel. If it’s level after 90 minutes, the tie goes to extra time and then penalties.
The gap between the clubs is wider than it was in 2025. Kiel went down from the Bundesliga and have had a slow season in the second tier, with one league win from nine games. Hoffenheim are 10th in the Bundesliga and playing Europa League football.
Kiel’s one win came on Sunday, though, and it was a convincing one: 3-0 at home to Dynamo Dresden. Tim Walter’s side had been bottom of the table going into the weekend, and the result lifted them to 13th.
Hoffenheim had their best day of the season on the same afternoon, beating Bayer Leverkusen 3-0 with three goals in the last 11 minutes. Christian Ilzer’s side have won three of their last four games in all competitions.
Hoffenheim are 1.41 to win, too short for me. Every one of the four previous meetings had at least three goals, and I’m looking at both sides scoring instead.
Holstein Kiel: five draws, a first win, and Harres with five goals
Kiel’s record in the 2. Bundesliga is one win, five draws and three defeats, with ten goals scored and 11 conceded. They’re hard to beat and, until Sunday, hard to watch.
The draws have come in batches: 2-2 with Nürnberg, 1-1 with Osnabrück, 0-0 with Hertha. Two of the three defeats were by a single goal, 1-0 at Heidenheim and 1-0 at Braunschweig.
Harres is the main threat. He has five league goals, one of them a penalty, and he scored in the 2-0 first-round win over 1860 Munich along with Balzi. Therkelsen has two league goals and Kapralik, Kvilitaia and Balzi one each.
The injury list is long. Taisei Abe has a back problem, Lasse Rosenboom, Frederik Roslyng and Hamza Muqaj are out with knee injuries, Steven Skrzybski has been missing with a muscle injury since 20 September and Sebastian Schonlau has been out with a wound since 19 October.
Walter’s side scored three times on Sunday against a Dresden defence that has conceded 18 league goals. Three of their ten league goals came in that one game, after a run of one goal in four league matches.

Hoffenheim: no draws, 14 goals scored and 14 conceded in the league
Hoffenheim haven’t drawn a Bundesliga game this season. They’ve won three and lost four, and their goal difference is exactly zero at 14 scored and 14 conceded.
The defeats have been close and high-scoring. They lost 3-2 at Köln, 3-2 at home to Dortmund, 3-1 at Paderborn and 3-2 at home to Hamburg on 10 October. The wins have been 2-1 against Stuttgart, 2-1 at Gladbach and Sunday’s 3-0 over Leverkusen, when Kramaric scored a penalty on 79 minutes, Prass added a second and Moerstedt the third in stoppage time.
The Europa League tells the same story. Ilzer’s side lost 3-2 to Besiktas on 15 October and beat Lyon 3-0 a week later. Over their last 20 matches, 19 have produced three goals or more.
The goals are spread around. Daghim, Hlozek and Prass have two league goals each, and Kramaric has one in the league and one in Europe, mostly from the bench. The XI that beat Leverkusen was Baumann; Coufal, Kabak, Machida, Rots; Avdullahu, Burger; Prass, Asllani, Hlozek; Daghim.
With an away league game at Werder Bremen on Saturday, Ilzer may change several players. Hoffenheim won 4-0 against Erzgebirge Aue in the first round, Wimmer scoring twice and Burger and Moerstedt adding the others.

Free Football Prediction: Holstein Kiel vs Hoffenheim
Our prediction: Both teams to score @ 1.47
I’m backing goals at both ends. Hoffenheim have conceded in six of their seven league games, the Leverkusen win being the only clean sheet, and they’ve let in 14 goals. Their games almost always open up: 19 of their last 20 have had at least three goals.
Kiel’s attack is the doubt. They’ve scored ten goals in nine league games and have only just won for the first time. But Harres has five league goals, Kiel scored twice against 1860 in the first round and three times on Sunday, and Hoffenheim have kept one clean sheet in seven league games.
Every one of the four previous meetings had three goals or more, and Kiel scored in all four of them. Both teams to score at 1.47 is my pick.

About our free predictions
- What we publish on MathOdds are analyses, nothing more. We share a view, a reading of the moment, but never a guarantee. Sport remains what it is: unpredictable. A red card, an injury, a last-minute goal, and the script changes completely.
- Let’s be clear: there is no such thing as a risk-free bet. Even when it looks “obvious”, nothing ever is. And yes, that means you can lose. It’s even inevitable at some point.
- The smartest approach is to stay reasonable. Bet small, set a budget and stick to it. Never use money you need to live on. And above all: don’t chase your losses: that rarely ends well.
- A bet should remain a game, not a job or a source of income. If it starts taking up too much space in your daily life, causes stress or frustration, take a break. And if needed, talk to a support organisation: that’s what they’re there for.
- Ultimately, responsibility lies with you. Reading our content means accepting that risk exists and will never disappear, no matter how good the analysis.
- Essential reminder: gambling is prohibited for minors and must comply with the laws of your country. Need help? Visit begambleaware.org.

A prediction is always based on what we know at the time of writing. But between publication and kick-off, a lineup can change, a player picks up an injury, the weather turns, and the analysis can quickly be outdated. We cannot be held responsible for that.
