Tennis: Hijikata flips Djokovic in three sets at Bercy

A fast start that did not last

Novak Djokovic is out of the Rolex Paris Masters. Rinky Hijikata, the 83rd-ranked Australian who came through qualifying, beat him 2-6, 6-3, 6-3 in the second round on Wednesday.

Djokovic looked in control early. He broke Hijikata in the opening game and took the first set 6-2. From there the match turned. Hijikata started to dictate the rallies, pulled the second set level, and then never let the Serb settle in the decider.

Turin hopes end

The loss lands hard because of what was riding on it. Djokovic, the 10th seed, had survived a set and a break down against Valentin Vacherot in round one on Tuesday, a result that kept his ATP Finals chances alive. Losing to a qualifier ends that run. A place in Turin is now out of reach for him this season.

For Hijikata, it is the second straight statement in Paris. He opened the week by beating 21st-ranked Luciano Darderi as a qualifier, and he now owns a win over a seven-time champion of this event.

It was also a rough day for the top of the draw. Alexander Zverev, newly world No. 1, lost his opening match to Lorenzo Musetti a few hours earlier.
