Premier League: Havertz goal lifts Arsenal past Liverpool

Anfield falls quiet after 16 minutes

Arsenal had gone 13 league visits to Liverpool without a win. It arrived on Sunday, 1-0, and it came from one mistake. A loose moment from Alisson in the 16th minute started a move down the right, Declan Rice crossed, and Kai Havertz arrived at the far post to finish.

That was the whole scoreline. The Gunners’ last league win at Anfield was a 2-0 in 2012-13, and since then they had taken five draws and lost eight times. Liverpool were also one home game away from a club record of 14 league matches unbeaten against Arsenal at Anfield.

The hosts will wonder how they lost. Liverpool finished with 17 shots and none on target. Florian Wirtz hit the crossbar with a free kick shortly before half-time, Mac Allister headed over from close range, and David Raya made a late catch from a Dominik Szoboszlai delivery to protect the lead.

A patched-up Arsenal still go top

Mikel Arteta started without Bukayo Saka and William Saliba, both injured, and Max Dowman was suspended. Gyokeres began on the bench and came on with ten minutes left, alongside Hincapie, as Arsenal packed the box. Calafiori, normally a full-back, finished the game as a defensive winger.

The result takes Arsenal to 24 points. Manchester City lost on Saturday, so the Gunners move three clear at the top after nine games. It also steadies a week that began badly, when Arsenal went out of the League Cup on penalties at Fleetwood.

Liverpool had come in with five straight wins and 15 goals in that run. Andoni Iraola handed 19-year-old Trey Nyoni his first Premier League start and used Jeremy Jacquet and Bradley Barcola from the first whistle, but the final ball never found a shooter in the right place.

What comes next

Arsenal have the lead and the confidence that comes from winning at a ground that has caused them so much trouble. Liverpool, fifth before kick-off, missed the chance to move closer to the top four and need to turn volume into shots on target.
